Citizens as Journalists

How social media has made ordinary citizens journalists in the 21st century.

With the advancement of technology and with a majority of individuals having smart phones, social media is the most readily accessible place to find news. Citizens play a drastic role in journalism and the news making process by allowing ordinary people to produce their own form of news to share across these various social media platforms. This can be a great tool to obtain news but has also proved to be problem when some “news” that ordinary people create leads to be false.

Tweet of Manchester Bombing, thinking it was a balloon that popped. (Pulled from google Images)

The above tweet shows the impact that citizens can have on the news. This individual tweeted thinking a balloon popped but in actuality a bomb was set off at the Manchester Arena. This kind of journalism can prove to be confusing when the citizen may not have all the facts.

Above is a quick video that does a great job of explaining how to spot fake news. Fake news is quite a big problem as it spreads so easily these days via social media.

Plenty of media generated from citizen journalists is not fake. Social media can also be a great tool to share current events that may not be getting much attention in the News such as this tweet above.

The above video is a testament to how citizens can be great journalists and a very interesting story about how social media aided the investigation of two murders.

This article above does a great job of defining citizens as journalists and the importance of individuals sharing content that professional journalists might be hesitant to get involved in. As well as expand the news and insight we all receive.

Lastly social media accounts such as the one above called “The Onion” are around to strictly create fake news based media. There is even a hashtag trending (#nottheonion) used when tweeting something that is actually legitimate news.

Citizen Journalism is a great tool for individuals to be able to voice their opinion, especially for people like me who do not have cable and almost completely rely on social media to get my news. There are tons of information out there and plenty can be considered fake news, but you just have to be mindful of what you are considering to be true and check the facts. Social media is the new tool for journalists as we progress into the future, and I think it’s here to stay.
