Requiem For a Dream

I recently watched a movie “Requiem for a Dream” and I can’t stop thinking about it. I started watching this movie and half way through it I realized that I didn’t know the meaning of ‘Requiem’. I googled it and this is what i found as the meaning of requiem ‘a Mass for the repose of the souls of the dead’, and at that point it didn’t make any sense, but at the end of the movie it made perfect sense to me, and will also be the same with you once you watch the movie.

The character among these whose story I loved the most was that of Sara Goldfarb(Harry’s mother). She is a lonely widow probably in her late 50’s or early 60’s. Her son has abandoned her in the lure of drugs and she is not very popular among the ladies of her age in the society. However, there is one thing that she absolutely loves, that is watching TV(especially a particular reality show in which the winner’s are picked from the general public) and her dream is to appear in that show at least once in her life. And she gets the opportunity to do so, when she receives a phone call from the show’s organizers asking her to post the details about her and she does.

She wants to wear a particular red dress to the show, which she wore during her son’s graduation but she doesn’t fit in it anymore. She wants to lose weight but she is obsessingly fond of high calorie foods. So, upon advice from one of her friends she decides to visit a doctor, who gives her a few pills. And this begins her tragic journey into drug addiction and ultimately lunacy.

What I loved about her is the silly problems in her life that she worries the most about. For example, when her son, on knowing about her taking the pills, asks her to quit this madness and asks why it is so important go to that TV show, she says “ You drove up in a cab. Did you see who had the best seat?”, she meant the best seat among the other ladies of her age in the locality. This matters so much to her. Before this she was a lonely nobody and now she gets the best seat. That shows how much a big deal that is to her. But little does she know that these pills will lead her to such a dark place that she can never come out of it. I felt bad for her the most, because unlike other characters, she was innocent, she didn’t know what she was getting into.

However, what I loved the most about the movie apart from the brilliant screenplay, fabulous acting, great story and the realism is, the background music (especially, the parts played in violin).

But despite all the praise for the background score I found in the internet, I feel this is one of the most underrated music, at least in India. Yes, there are very few regular Hollywood film goers in the country but the background scores of the movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception etc are extremely famous in India. But this is also partly because the movie released in 2000 and its not a very commercial , big budget kind of movie. But nonetheless, I think any movie lover should definitely watch this movie.
