Save Yourself the Time

I’m no scientist though. I didn’t take this experiment too seriously and I made not sure to be ashamed of starting the timer, typing in “video games” as my activity, and then playing for 3 hours. Toggl became part of my life for two and a half weeks.

I decided on a whim to stop the experiment yesterday, in the middle of the day. I recorded (nearly) every minute of every day for 18 days straight including activities like sleeping, eating, getting groceries, watching movies, etc. I thought there was little more to gain from continuing with this — I got all the information I needed. I probably could have stopped after a week with the same results. But I think it can be good for me to overcommit to things I don’t really enjoy; suffer a bit.

What I do like about Toggl is that I was able to divide an activity into a task name (‘Walking’) but also associate it with a broader group of tasks (‘Health & Fitness’). This allowed me to squeeze out some additional info into how I was spending my time.

An average of 21 Hours were accounted for each day.

The averaging of this data was the scary part for me. I spent an average of just barely 6 hours sleeping daily (average of 17 nights as I stopped in the middle of day 18) and not too far behind was “Nonsense” at 5:14 Hours Daily. That’s really what I went through all of this to see. I bet I would feel better trading just one hour of nonsense for an hour of sleep.

Overall, I would not recommend this experiment if you already have a hunch about where your time is going. I think you’ll come to similar conclusions so just save yourself the time. 😁
