LE Lamp Critique

This interface critique applies to the LE Dimmable LED Desk Lamp. The features of this lamp include a rotatable lamp head, a touch sensitive control pad for adjusting brightness and controlling on and off operations, and a base stabilizer.

This desk lamp has features that prove to be beneficial to the user. The touch control pad is a great design choice because it stays consistent with today’s product design trends. This allows users to easily learn how to use the control pad since the design layout is similar to existing product design patterns. Some product designs that make this interface recognizable and learn-able are touch screen phones that use the same symbols for power and brightness adjustment as this lamp design does. Furthermore, the rotatable lamp head is a good design choice since it gives the user the power to control the direction of the where the light shines in addition to the user already being able to control the brightness level of the lamp. These two features complement each other well as they give the user the feeling of having control over where and how strong the lamp shines.

This lamp sacrifices functionality for appearance. This design choice was likely made to stay consistent with the brand image, which is to be simple and modernized. Because of this, a light bulb which shines much brighter than the LED light that this lamp uses is not incorporated into the design. However, a LED light is much more sensitive on the eyes and with society gearing more towards health, this makes the light a good design choice in terms of staying consistent with the modern trend. Using a light bulb would be more functional in terms of emitting light at a lower cost, but it would go against the brand image since it would make the look lamp bulky and old fashioned.

The design of this lamp is as said before, simple and modern. This aspect of it stays consistent with the brand’s image as most of their products stick to a modern design. The is clear by their choice of excluding a traditional light bulb and opting for LED light. The touch controls are consistent with existing touch control designs in terms of the symbols used. This makes the interface easy to pick up since users are already familiar with this type of interface. In addition, because the design is very simple, there are not many things to remember when it comes to using it. Therefore, this interface easy to learn and remember as well.

There are a few changes that can be made to this design while staying consistent with its goal of simplicity and being modern. One would be to add braille-like bumps on the touch icons of the touch controls, this is a small change, but would increase the learn-ability and memorability of the interface since it would encourage the users to touch the symbols. Lastly, I would add a plug outlet at the base of the lamp. This is consistent with the brand’s image due to modernization and overall it makes the product more appealing since people tend to use desk lamps for work and having an outlet on the lamp would be beneficial.
