Two Types of Courage

There are two types of courage. The one that fought with all his might in the face of trials and the one that despite the helplessness he feels, would choose to stand in the face of war. The first…

Remarkable Findings from Intern Days

Considering the ups and downs in getting the internship at mental health hospital and not to mention the marvelous experience I had during my time inside the hospital, being an intern at mental health hospital will always be dear to my heart.

The remarkable findings I found striking to me are:

1. The majority of the patients’ sex are male (out of 62 patients, 41 of them are male!). This is because society teaches us that men shouldn’t reveal their feelings freely. They are considered weak when they cry, considered less manly if they want to talk about the inconveniences they face, and also considered ‘stronger’ than women so that whatever issues they face, they must be able to solve them themselves. Holding feelings back can trigger stress and depression and even psychological disorders that could lead someone to end up in mental health hospital

2. People’s stigma towards going to psychologists and psychiatrists is still inconclusive. People tend to prefer seeking help from religious leaders because going to a psychologist or psychiatrist is still taboo by most people (or in my case, almost 95% of the patients at the mental health hospital where I was an intern preferred to ruqyah (exorcism in Islam) rather than going to professionals)

3. Common people, especially from the lower middle class, still find it difficult to access mental health services due to a lack of education, strong negative stigma, and lack of funds to seek professional help.

4. The majority of patients in mental health hospitals suffer from paranoid schizophrenia (almost 90%)

5. The majority of patients suffering from mental disorders due to a breakup and broken heart (love not only makes you blind but can also let you go to a mental health hospital)

I think the most noteworthy thing is, whoever we are and whatever our gender — it’s okay to talk about whatever issues we are facing. As Carl Jung said, the anima and the animus are present in each individual so don’t feel ‘weak’ because crying is just ‘common to women’. Crying is fine for anyone, regardless of gender. Because of the anima-animus concept, we must realize that there is a feminine side in men and a masculine side in women too. So there are no ‘weak men’ for doing what is considered ‘only for women’ and vice versa.
