The 1.1.1.1 WARP And WARP Plus by Cloudflare

Cloudflare just released its WARP and WARP Plus DNS Resolving methods to the public, Originally intended to be released on April 1st, it hit a snag because of the release of iOS 12.2. So what exactly is WARP technology. First, we look into the 1.1.1.1 service provided by Cloudflare up until now.

Different companies offer Different DNS resolving techniques like OpenDNS, Google, Cloudflare, Verisign. There are also many free DNS providers like Hurricane Electric Internet services, Free DNS, RackSpace. So what does 1.1.1.1 provide us with that sets itself apart?

Source: 1.1.1.1 (CloudFlare)

1.1.1.1 now with WARP provides us faster and secure DNS resolving for free, wait for what? You read that right Faster DNS service compared to those available in the market right now and even more secure. WARP is used to build this service to “thrive in the harsh conditions of the modern mobile Internet”.

Let's Talk about faster first; how can this service be faster than all others. The solution comes from the other ventures of the company, Cloudflare has a vast network around the world, and it is using this network to provide an uncongested path to the required website/server. WARP also claims that it has built itself around UDP protocol, meaning it is better suited for wireless communication

Now over to security, how can something that is offered free in this era be really secure? We have had enough share of our data stolen to fall for these traps, but what makes WARP different from other money-minded services.

CloudFlare gives 2 Major reasons

1. They don’t write user-identifiable log data to disk.

2. They will regularly hire outside auditors to ensure they are living up to these promises.

Indeed, they Do not collect any personal information whilst a person uses the service like phone number, name, email etc. But are those really necessary in this day to get data? The Mac Address on a device can be used to track a particular individual, but as they say, they don’t write user-identifiable log data to disk.

So the point of failure here is to trust CloudFlare that it will not store any data regarding a person. The second covers it as outside auditors are hired to ensure that the data is not stored in any format. CloudFlare has worked with Mozilla to ensure that the data transfer is both faster and secure.

So what profit does CloudFlare make from 1.1.1.1? Firstly this is not the companies primary source of revenue, and Secondly, the WARP Plus is a paid monthly subscription; they have repeatedly said that Warp Plus will cost just as much as a McDonald's Big Mac in the area, the difference being the connection established through optimized and faster paths thus WARP plus is faster than WARP and also costlier.

There are currently 2 ways to access this service

2. By enabling private DNS on Android
Settings -> WiFi Settings -> Private DNS

Select ‘Private DNS provider hostname’ and type

Currently, WARP plus is not available through this method

As This project is just out in the market, it will take some time to be bug-free. Till then, try to keep using the app.

Happy and Safe Browsing.
