When you look at the current state of battery technology on the surface you cans see how far humanity has come from their past of being without electricity. When you look further down you see that our evolution has birthed a supply chain that needs more than our society can provide in a sustainable manner. This being due to the supply of lithium that accounts for up to 25% of the cost of our main form of energy storage, and its every increasing price do to its comprehensive procurement methods. Solving this issue means developing another material to take the load of demand from one single element and split it with another. Therefore sodium batteries are being developed to compete against and hopefully outperform its lithium counterpart.

As researchers delve into the sodium ion technology they face issues that limit its capacity to hold charge over time thus makin them less preferred over its sodium counterpart. This has been a main issue that has plagues sodium ion batteries since its advent days of research. Studies from Washington University/PNLL show improvements on this issue thus showing the world where the main research is taking place. Within ACS Energy letters were taken through the explanation of why lithium ion batteries are preferred but also how they measure up to sodium ion competition.

Here were able to see the current energy density measurements of sodium batteries in comparison to lithium. Although it lags behind slightly, future advancements by students within electrochemical studies in university are who hold the future in their hands.
