What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is trending for a reason.

The oldest feature of human culture is religion. We have always believed in something beyond our comprehension, and so we have adopted many practices to vow to that natural force. As we progress, religion and philosophy are born with a goal to mitigate people’s unhealthy or harmful behaviors.

Buddhism brings to our meditation, a practice where we can enjoy full awareness with a religious purpose. That’s the main reason why is popular in Asia, but it’s not something we are familiar with in the West; mainly because our tradition is going to a place to pray.

However, as media evolves we start to be aware of other’s culture. That’s how we find meditation and other main parts of this practice, and we assemble our own philosophy: mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a practice where you are fully aware of your senses, mantra, or other sensation/thought for health benefits. You practice meditation, not for a belief or to fulfill a philosophical purpose, but you do it for the only reason that it gives you benefits.

It’s similar to taking a walk of 30 minutes every day. You don’t do it to surrender yourself to nature, you do it because is healthy and you like the benefits.

Mindfulness basically is a scientific way to approach total awareness of you. It’s also based around goals; you are not doing it just for the sake of it. You have a goal in mind that you want to reach with mindfulness.

Through the practice of mindfulness you can have as a result a longer attention span, you are less likely to relapse in a depressive episode, and it reduces your anxiety. Besides, it stimulates self-discipline for you have to meditate every day in a short period of 5 minutes maximum.

The goal is to clear your mind. Nonetheless, to get there is important for you to build a habit and also dare to practice self-acceptance, as it’s completely normal to not achieve this through the first stages of going for your goal.

If you are interested in mindfulness, I want to encourage you to start practicing it with some guidance online first before you take on start your own journey. Remember to always be kind to yourself during this practice.
