What does forgiveness look like to you?

For me forgiveness represents freedom. Letting go of the overwhelming anxieties that come from being guilt ridden or the disparagement of not having your pain acknowledged. Giving it to God. It seems everyone has a different idea of what forgiveness is. It’s pretty difficult to do or practice something we truly don’t understand. Forgiveness is a personal journey of intentionally removing feelings of hurt, anger, vengeance, etc. and replacing them with feelings such as empathy compassion and peace. You accept but not condone what has happened, and you are willing to move past it and move on with your life without ruminating over the transgression while understanding the events cannot be changed. Typically, when forgiveness takes place that does not necessarily equate to reconciliation — it a relational concept. We are not obligated to reconcile if we forgive, but reconciliation does require forgiveness. Forgiveness is not about changing the past; it’s about changing the future. Forgiveness accepts and addresses the past but focuses on the future. It looks toward a future of healing and hope.
