What the distractions are and strategies to deal with them

My point? How much more could we get done if people did not come around to talk about their weekends and ask about yours? What novels could we write if we ignored our smartphone’s pings? How would we feel if we did not have meetings and got all of our work done without working overtime and weekends? Distractions are insidious. They are preventing you from doing your best work.

I took a look at my life, trying to write every day, and I noted down the top distractions preventing me from doing my best work, and how I dealt with each one.

*Ping* You have a Facebook message. *Ping* You have a marketing email from the store you bought that one trinket many years ago.

Are any of these notifications helping you get what you want in life? Will reading a Facebook message help you get your work done?

Strategy: The first thing I do when I go to work? Charge my smartphone away from my work desk. Since I work from home, I have a small charging station set up in my kitchen away from where I work. I turn off vibrations. I turn off any sounds. If I get a call, it means I let it go to voicemail. I don’t trust myself to not look at my smartphone if I’m working and it is near me, so rather than rely on my willpower, I set it aside so I have to get up and walk over to check my phone.
