The Footbridge

Not upon a broad expanse of road
do I see life’s journey
nor upon paths through woods and meadow
but rather as a footbridge that made its way
above towns and cities and over
forest,field, lake and river

Sometimes the bridge might swing
so low to the ground that I might better hear
the splash of a stone into a pond
or smell wild roses spilling themselves
over some long abandoned gate and catch
the sound of honey bees drawing nectar

Sometimes the bridge can seem to rise so high
that what I long to see fades into mist
yet mountaintops are viewed from such heights
and large rivers might be seen racing through
chasms, like schoolchildren released by a bell
startling me sometimes with majesty while leaving
me trembling at others

Only my perception of the footbridge varies
it often is as broad as a highway
with room aplenty for Friends and Lovers
perhaps even Foes but with guardrails alongside

There are times when my footbridge is little else
it narrows to not much more than my own width
no hand rails or ropes provide support,
I confess to having lowered myself to all fours
on more than one attempt to escape falling
into an abyss, imagined or otherwise
and I did peer into the depths between the footbridge slats
despite the fact that I knew better

It brings me comfort to know I always continue on
though I have frequently retreated,
I have not turned back
I shall continue to run and walk or crawl
to — well, I guess to wherever
to be continued is.
