Maybe it’s your hearing

Losing one of your senses can change your life…..or not. You can decide. If you could pick, which would be the easiest to live without?

Out of the five common senses most of us have, touch, taste and smell may be the easiest to do without. Sight for me would be the worst. Losing my hearing ranked right up there.

I wasn’t born deaf or even hard of hearing. It just slipped away slowly in my fifties. At first, you accuse your spouse of mumbling, then the telephone loses its clarity and before you know it you are missing key words in a conversation.

This is the point at which your life can change. Be on guard! If you are not ready to face your poor hearing and do something about it, personality changes take place.

Withdrawing from friends and associates because you are embarrassed only gets worse until you no longer want to go anywhere. Fortunately my occupation as a Realtor forced me to stay in the public eye.

Pretending only makes you look like an idiot when you try to pick up the thread at an inappropriate moment.

Laughing and talking incessantly so no-one else can get a word in will get you cut from the dinner party circle in no time flat. My mother became an extreme talker in later life launching into story after story as soon as she picked up a connection from the current conversation.

“….remember our trip to the Middle East……”

“….when we were in Spain your father got so lost…..”

and away she would go, barely taking a breath, like a filibuster on the floor of the Senate. It was a long time before I caught on to the fact she was quite deaf.

If you suspect that you are not hearing well, or others are dropping hints, head to the closest hearing specialist and get checked. Hearing aids are hi-tech and almost invisible and can be adjusted to accommodate most lifestyles.

I didn’t wait too long to get help. My clients muttering between themselves while on a house tour was information I couldn’t afford to miss. Do they like the floor plan? Are the neighbors too close?
