I turned 16 in November 1990. My hair fell nearly to my waist, a black t-shirt under a plaid flannel, 5–6 necklaces, patched jeans, Birkenstocks — that was me. I was the youngest in my class, and with a November birthday, I was still 15 when I started junior year of high school.

Every August, I came home salty and hungover from two months at summer camp in the north woods of Wisconsin, and the music was always, always on. It felt, at times, like I lived two separate lives- my school year life and my summer life. I lived far away from my summer camp family, but most of my musical interests come from the influence of my summer life and my parents’ album collection — When I was little, our living room had a stereo, plants, and a cat perch, and no furniture. It was perfect for dancing around to The Doors, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, and Joni Mitchell.
